While my husband and I were hiking at Guadalupe Mountains National Park we happened upon some agave plants alongside the trail. Their flower heads were HUGE with colorful buds getting ready to open. Some tiny butterflies were flitting around them. I took several reference photos and I used one of them for this painting. Tiny details were rendered using various brands of pastel pencils.
