C&O Canal, Early Spring

This piece depicts a section of the historic canal which runs from Washington, DC, to Cumberland, MD, in a season during which it receives few visitors. Still-leafless trees enhanced the sense of space, while the muted colors foreshadowed the arrival of spring.
